Most of us don't even realise it, but the home pages for internet heavyweights such as Amazon, Facebook and YouTube have changed beyond recognition since they launched.

Likewise, most of us don't remember that Google once had an exclamation mark - Google! -  and only indexed 25 million pages, as opposed to 25 billion at last count, or that Amazon was once monochrome and billed as 'Earth's biggest bookshop.'

With their plain colour schemes and emphasis on text rather than images, it’s hard to believe that these prehistoric home pages developed into the content-heavy pages that billions now visit.
