DMOZ.org, also known as The Open Directory Project is “the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web” so of all of the online directories that you might want to get your site listed on, DMOZ should be at the top of your list. When a person is looking for a product or service on the web they don’t look for it on DMOZ.org but that does not matter as Google looks at DMOZ.org, both for the snippets it places under search results and it also looks at a link to your website from DMOZ.org when considering the PageRank of your website.
Don’t be put off by the archaic style of DMOZ.org, it is still a very relevant website when it comes to link building and link building is important as it helps your Google PageRank.
Google Snippets
Snippets are the two lines of text that appear below your website when it appears in a Google search result. Google says that its creation of these snippets is automated and that it will use a variety of sources when deciding on the snippet to appear below each search result. These sources include the content of a page and the text that you have put in the DESCRIPTION meta tag on that page. I find that when I use the description meta tag, the snippet for that page in the Google search result is indeed taken from the first 160 characters of the text in the DESCRIPTION meta tag for that page.
If there is no text in the description meta tag of a page, Google will also use the text about that website that is listed DMOZ.org . Google specifically says “We use a number of different sources for this information, including descriptive information in the META tag for each page. Where this information isn’t available, we may use publicly available information from DMOZ.”
This means that each page on your website should have an accurate description that is written specifically for that page. This text should also read like a short classified ad and point out what about that page makes it worthwhile visiting. This will improve your click through rate i.e. the number of times that the link is clicked on compared to the number of times it appears in search results.
You can also direct Google to not use DMOZ.org as a source for snippets about your website.
To prevent all search engines from using DMOZ.org for the page’s description, use the following:
<meta name="robots" content="NOODP">
To specifically prevent Google from using DMOZ.org for a page’s description, use the following:
<meta name="googlebot" content="NOODP">

The Link Power of DMOZ
As well as using DMOZ.org to generate site snippets, Google also looks at the links to other sites from DMOZ and DMOZ.og has a very high PageRank (8/10) which means a link to your website from DMOZ.org is very powerful indeed. So if you have a website log on to DMOZ.org and check if it is listed there and if not add it under the appropriate category. It may take some time for your site to be listed and there are many complaints about the editorial policy of DMOZ but it certainly is worth submitting your site. Signing up is also very easy. All you have to do is visit the website at www.dmoz.org. You can then select a category or subcategory for which your website is classified and then submit your URL.
